Carol laid a hand on his arm, intending gentleness--achieving intrusiveness. "Jim, maybe his parents--"

"His parents? Carol, his father's disapproved of--of *us* from day one." Kirk sighed. "The robe he wore on the day--the day we--" His voice broke. "They'll just think it's a rag, and give it away. It should be mine. I'm his widower."

"Well, you're not a widower," Carol pointed out. "You weren't even--"

"How the hell do you define married, then?!"
