Hugs & Kisses -Kat Background --- Prequel story to the love behind Roger Korby and Chris Chapel. Includes Character Number One from the original pilot whom I've named Elizabeth. Love Me Forever Christine yawned and pulled her blankets high over her head. She had heard her sister calling her for a while now. *Once more and I swear I'll kill her,* she thought. Her half sister Elizabeth walked into the room. She grabbed the edge of the blankets and ripped them off of Christine. "I said, ' Your fiance's here and he wants to see you!" She screamed it into Chris' ear. "Now, let's try this in a slightly more civilized manner." Christine stood up, growling at her sister. "I'm sure he could wait. I've been up half the night studying. Besides, shouldn't you be asleep? You were up late too." "I was just writing a letter, Chris; doesn't take much brain power. But then you wouldn't know that would you?" Christine jumped up and whacked her older sister on the back. She pulled her robe on and trudged out of the room. She stopped at the top of the stairs and smiled at Roger Korby. He was tall and very handsome. He smiled back at her and held his arms open. She ran down the stairs and threw herself into his arms. He embraced her and kissed her gently, stroking her hair back. "How's my darling this morning?" He looked down at her. She lifted her head off of his chest and smiled again. "A little tired. I was studying all night." She glared behind her at her sister. Elizabeth simply smiled and shrugged. "I need to talk to you, Chris. It's very important." Roger became suddenly serious. Christine got worried and nodded. "Let me change and we can sit outside." Roger smiled. "Don't worry, I'm not dumping you, babe." She shook her head. "It didn't even cross my mind." She hurried upstairs and shut her door. Roger looked up at Elizabeth. "Would you mind making sure she's okay?" He asked quietly. She shook her and turned to the door. She knocked softly. When Chris didn't answer, she opened it and walked inside. "Chrissy? Honey, where are you?" "My bed." The muffled response was laced with tears. Elizabeth walked to the bed and sat on the edge. "I thought you were supposed to get dressed, hun." She pulled the blankets down a bit and stroked her hair out of her face. "I don't want to hear it." "You don't even know what he's going to say." "He's leaving me Liz! Isn't it obvious?" Chris sat up and wiped her wet face. "He said he wasn't." "Men always say things like that!" Chris leaned against her sister and looked up at her. "Have you ever had a boyfriend?" Liz smiled. "No. But I have fallen in love." "With who?" Chris got excited. "With my captain, on the Enterprise. Being a first officer is really hard when the captain's a guy.... a cute guy." Liz shrugged. "But he left the ship and a new captain came aboard. I didn't want to be involved any further with that ship after what happened to my Captain, so I talked him into getting me reassigned to Starfleet Headquarters." "What happened to your lover?" "He was never my lover, I just liked him. He had a serious accident and has been in a cared-for-24/7 type of home." Liz smiled softly. "He can hardly think for himself." "You should go visit him." Chris stated as though they'd been in love forever. "I couldn't. It'd be too hard."Liz looked slightly upset. "Don't let it bother you too much. It was just a passing love interest. Me on the other hand, I'm supposed to marry this man." Liz glared at Chris. "You're not even going to change; you're going down there right now and you're going to let him tell you what's on his mind before you upset yourself and get really mad." Chris let her sister kiss her on her forehead and then she walked out. Roger smiled from the doorway. "I thought you were changing, love?" "No, I um.... changed my mind." She reached the bottom of the stairs and followed him outside." "I need you to not speak of this. I was not supposed to tell even you. Promise me." She nodded. "I promise." He sat on the porch swing and let her snuggle up against him. "Starfleet has asked me to go aboard a spaceship for a few months and help them in their studies of ... something." "Why couldn't you tell me that?" She asked. "No one's supposed to know I even left the planet. So you have to carry on as if nothing's different no matter how long it takes. If word gets out about me being gone there will be a lot of speculation as to why. And speculation is the last thing Starfleet needs, especially when it turns into accusation." Christine looked at him. She was lost. Was he really going on a mission from Starfleet? Or was he simply dumping her? Was he going to come home and marry her like he promised? She began to feel frightened and she grabbed his arm tightly. "Do you really have to go?" She begged. "Please don't. I love you, Roger!" "I love you too, Chris, but I'll be home soon." "This means we have to postpone the wedding ... again." She started crying. "I'm sorry, baby, you know when Starfleet asks me to do something, I can't just turn it down." He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the forehead. "Better?" She nodded, to please him. "There then. I have to get going. I'll write to you, my love." He stood and kissed her tenderly. With a final wave he walked down the old road leading away from her house. Christine stood watching, fresh tears welling up in her eyes. She felt a gentle push from behind then felt her sister's arms slip around her. "Everything all right?" Elizabeth whispered knowing very well what the answer would be. "Have you ever been so in love with someone that you're sure they don't feel that way about you?" Chris looked at Liz questioningly. "Yes I have. Did he just dump you?" "He says he'll be back. I can only trust him." "Come on, honey." Elizabeth pulled her inside. "Someday you are going to be a doctor. When that day comes you'll forget all about Roger and you'll be obsessing over some tall handsome gentleman from Rigel seven...." The two started laughing. "....Or maybe I'll have my own practice and a home with a wonderful husband with whom I'll spend many long years with." Christine smiled in hope. //
